He also played admirably in the 2012–13 campaign. He surpassed 30 double-doubles in a season for the ninth time in the team’s history. He played 31.3 minutes per game, averaging 11.7 points on.488 shooting, 9.4 rebounds, and 0.9 blocks. He decided to change his shooting hand from his left to his right during the 2013 offseason. Despite this shift, his performance in the 2013–14 season was nearly identical to what it had been the year before.

He assisted the Cavs in the 2015 NBA Finals during the following season. The Golden State Warriors were their opponent, and they lost the series in six games. Thompson was a restricted free agent after the season.

He agreed to an $82 million contract with the Cavs in October of that year. He aided them on their second trip to the NBA Finals, where they made history of the NBA by overturning a 3-1 deficit against the Golden State Warriors. They eventually prevailed in the series in seven games to claim the title.

He played in 400 straight games starting in December 2016, making him the only player in the franchise’s history to accomplish this feat. Despite making it to the NBA finals for the third time, his team was ultimately defeated by the Golden State Warriors.
