South Africa has not had the best of outings in Australia losing the series 2-0. The Proteas skipper Dean Elgar failed to score runs against the Aussie bowing attack. South Africa under the leadership of Dean Elgar has seen a dip in their performances overseas. Elgar’s individual performance with the bat at the top of the order has been poor. He failed to score a century since taking over as the captain of the South African test team in 2021.

The 35 year old averages 28.40 with no scores of more than 36 in his last 10 test innings. He averages 14. 84 as captain (The worst record by any player captaining a test side). However he wishes to continue and lead the team and believes that he still has the “Hunger and Drive” to serve as a captain. Elgar is determined to lead the team until the last series of the current World Test Championship (WTC) cycle. South Africa will face West indies in a two match series in their ow backyard in February.
We have got two tests coming up and then potentially a lot of time off myself for some gully cricket. Then the pressure is off a little bit. Then I enjoy the pressure and responsibilities of being a captain and leading the team. If I was scoring runs it would have been a lot easier for me to say that I want to continue leading the side. But you got to ask yourself the questions and I have. I still have the hunger and drive, no doubt. Elgar said in the post match press conference.
It’s Frustrating that I could never get going through the series: Elgar

After losing the series 2-0 against Australia, Elgar reflects back on his performance in the test series. He never got going in a single innings. He expressed his optimism of making a stronger comeback in 2023 after his poor run in 2022. In the press conference he also admits that he was totally upset by the way he gave his gave away his wicket down the leg. Elgar was dismissed three times in his leg outing down the leg.
It is a tough place to tour, maybe the toughest in the world. Test cricket teaches you resilience. When things aren’t on your side, you still have to wake up and try again. That’s why they call it a Test, it tests every facet of your personality. (On his poor form) Something I’ll reflect on. I’m the captain but I’m also the run scorer, that hasn’t worked out this series. But I know I’ll be back. I have the fight to get better from here, no doubt. Elgar further added.
