India is set to take on New Zealand in the first ODI of the three-match series on Wednesday (Jan 18th) at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad. On the eve of the match, the Indian team was dealt a blow as Shreyas Iyer was ruled out of the One Day International Series. The Indian batter was ruled out due to a back injury and the selection committee named Rajat Patidar as Iyer’s replacement.
As per reports, Iyer, reported of a stiff back following the third and final ODI against Sri Lanka on Sunday. Though the extent to Iyer’s injury is not known and the batter will be leaving the team and heading to the National Cricket Academy for further tests and assessments. Following that Iyer is set to re-join the team for the upcoming India vs Australia four-match Test series.
Shreyas Iyer is part of the Indian team for the all-important Border-Gavaskar Trophy, set to be held next month in India.

Rajat Patidar to replace Shreyas Iyer
Providing an update on Iyer, BCCI secretary Jay Shah said in a statement, “Team India batter Shreyas Iyer has been ruled out of the upcoming 3-match ODI series against New Zealand due to a back injury. He will be heading to the National Cricket Academy (NCA) for further assessment and management.”
In the BCCI statement, Shah stated that Madhya Pradesh and Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) batter Rajat Patidar will take Shreyas Iyer’s place under the Rohit Sharma-led Indian side. “The All-India Senior Selection Committee has named Rajat Patidar as replacement for Shreyas Iyer,” stated Shah.
Following their T20I and ODI series win over Sri Lanka, India is set to host New Zealand in a three-match ODI series, followed by a three-match T20I series. The first ODI against New Zealand in Hyderabad on 18th January, 2023.
