The Boston Celtics, Miami Heat, Los Angeles Clippers, and San Antonio Spurs were all interested in acquiring Durant.
Instead, he joined the 73-win Golden State Warriors, and was immediately accused of being a coward, a cheat code — ruining the game’s parity by unfairly establishing an unstoppable team.
It is unusual for a superstar of Kevin Durant’s caliber to request a trade with four years remaining on his contract. For the time being, James might sign a contract extension with the Lakers this summer, effectively ending the Cleveland speculation.
What Holds in the future for Kevin Durant & Lebron James
For more than a month, Durant’s trade request has been the core of the NBA rumor mill. If he’s traded, say, to the Heat or Suns, 29 other fan bases will lose interest immediately. There’s also the increasingly likely potential that Durant may simply withdraw his request and return to the Nets next season.
Lebron James may go down in history as the greatest performer of all time, thus the setting for his final act is one we anxiously await.
Even though we love the NBA for its entertainment value, we also cherish the game itself. This summer, we have the opportunity to sit in a buzzing, full theater for a big-budget thriller, so let us appreciate the excitement before the potentially “lame” monster is revealed.
