UFC 279: Khamzat Chimaev vs Nate Diaz Preview
Chimaev’s rise in the UFC has been nothing short of incredible. He won his first two fights in a 10-day span. Khamzat Chimaev (11-0) returns after passing his most difficult test yet. By making all four of his UFC opponents look like amateurs, he stormed his way to the UFC and erupted into top prospect status.
He submitted John Phillips (2020), then knocked out Rhys McKee (2020) and Gerald Meershaert (2020) in two months before facing the formidable Li Jingliang (2021).

He then clobbered him and submitted him in the first round to set up his fight with former title challenger Gilbert Burns (2022). It was the “Fight of the Night,” and the winner received unanimous approval from all three judges.
Nate Diaz (20-13) was fed to the prodigy as a reward for expressing his dissatisfaction with the UFC brass. The veteran has 26 UFC fights under his belt, fighting alongside legends of the sport. He has, however, only won once since 2016.
After three years out, he put on a clinic against Anthony Pettis (2019), earning a dominant unanimous decision but then getting dominated himself.
First, by Jorge Masvidal (2019), where the doctor stopped further damage and lacerations, and then by current welterweight champion Leon Edwards, who cruised to a decision until the end.
UFC 279: Khamzat Chimaev vs Nate Diaz Prediction
Khamzat Chimaev is the real deal, and he just had the best fight of his career. He finally tasted the adversity that Diaz is known for, no matter how the fight goes.
Nate Diaz’s experience in cardio, volume boxing, and jiu-jitsu is unmatched. But will that be enough to bring the Chimaev train to a halt? We don’t believe so.
Chimaev can charge into range, tie him up, and throw him around the octagon. He also has the technique and power advantage to control Diaz on the ground and subdue his jiu-jitsu while raining down ground-and-pound.
Diaz’s only hope is that Chimaev has enough ego to stand and trade. Make him wilt with your volume, or catch him clean. Diaz, on the other hand, is frequently hit, and Chimaev’s striking is rapidly improving. He also has the ability to cause serious damage and change the color of his face.
We believe Chimaev answered all of Nate Diaz’s questions against Burns, who has superior jiu-jitsu and power. Given the amount of damage Chimaev took against him, Diaz is unlikely to knock him out. So, how does he complete the task?
Diaz’s jiu-jitsu is too good for submission, and he is too tough to be put to sleep. If the beating is severe enough, the referee will call it, otherwise it will be a five-round fight.
